History of World Congress on ‘Rural and Agricultural Finance’
Since last 50 years, the regional and global associations on rural and agricultural credit across the continents are promoting rural and agricultural finance by engaging with the central banks, development financial institutions, commercial banking institutions and government line departments. These associations are organizing policy forums, capacity building and knowledge enhancement events across the continents to support the regional and national development agenda on agricultural and rural development.
In 2004, the associations mooted the idea of holding one global event to bring all the stakeholders engaged in improving the flow of finance and investment in rural and agricultural sector with a larger objective to achieve the financial inclusion. The regional (APRACA, AFRACA, NENARACA and ALIDE) and the global (CICA) associations on promoting rural and agricultural credit unanimously adopted to convene the ‘World Congress on Rural and Agriculture Finance’ at regular interval (3 year) which will be hosted by the regional/global agricultural credit associations around the globe in close collaboration with the member institutions and the national government.
In this direction, till 2019, these associations organized 6 World Congress events in various locations around the globe which are all historical events responding the plea of the smallholder producers and Micro-enterprises in rural areas and supported to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).After COVID crisis and recent global tensions that have impacted agricultural and rural sectors, food security, as well as the need to continue working on the sustainable agenda issues, the associations jointly hosting the 7th version of the World Congress, which is scheduled to be held in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico, during 23-25 November 2022. Congress´ main topic is “Response to the emerging global scenario: financing as a lever to mitigate direct and indirect impacts on agricultural and rural enterprises”. Below are the details on the World Congress events.
1st World Congress was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia during 05-07 November 2005 was organized by Confédération Internationale Du Crédit Agricole (CICA) and African Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (AFRACA) in collaboration with the Government of Ethiopia.
2nd World Congress was organized in Bangkok during 31 October-03 November 2007 was organized by Asia-Pacific Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (APRACA) and hosted by Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) and Royal Government of Thailand.
The 3rd World Congress was held in Marrakech, Morocco during 28-30 October 2010 organized by Confédération Internationale Du Crédit Agricole (CICA) and hosted by Groupe Credit Agricole Du Maroc and Government of Morocco.
The 4th World Congress was held in Paris, France during 26-28 September 2013 which was organized by Confédération Internationale Du Crédit Agricole (CICA) and hosted by the Groupe Credit Agricole and Government of France.
The 5th World Congress was held in Dakar, Senegal, during 22-25 November 2016 which was organized by African Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (AFRACA) and hosted by the Caisse Nationale de Crédit Agricole du Sénégal (CNCAS) and the Government of Senegal.
The 6th World Congress was be held in New Delhi, India during 12-14 November 2019 organized by Asia-Pacific Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (APRACA) and hosted by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) in close collaboration with Government of India.
The 7th World Congress will be held in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico during 23-25 November 2022 which is being co-hosted by the Fideicomisos Instituidos en Relacion con la Agricultura (FIRA), Mexico, and the Latin American Association of Development Financing Institutions (ALIDE).
